Job description for Senior Mechanical Engineer at Autonomous Inc
Who we are
Autonomous is a US company. We design and manufacture our own hardware and sell it worldwide, from offices in New York, San Francisco, Shenzhen and Saigon. We publish our CAD, electronics and firmware as open source.
What's next
Here's some of what we've already shipped:
- Lamp. A desk robot with five servo-driven axes. It sees, moves, talks, and gives your AI agents a body.
- Harness. A single matte-black disc with a round, always-on display. No buttons. Tap the face, say the task, and it sends the work to every agent you run.
- WorkPod. A prefab backyard office that ships flatpack and goes up in one to two days. No slab. No permit.
- Office. Standing desks that read the room: CO2, particulates, VOC and noise. Ergonomic chairs with nine degrees of freedom.
- Autonomous Computer. Multi-GPU machines in a CNC-machined aluminum chassis, running AI models on-site.
They all run on Autonomous OS, our open-source platform for physical AI. The software can be reused from one product to the next, but every product needs its own mechanical design.
Next is a new line of AI hardware, not yet announced. You'll own it, end to end. Not a part, the whole product: what it's made of, how it moves, and how a factory builds it.
The role
You own the mechanical design of a new product. Concept to mass production. The enclosure, the structure, the motion, the tests, the build.
You won't get a fixed spec, and you won't hand your design off to someone else. You make the decisions, test them, and see the product through to launch.
What you'll do
- Take a product from the first sketch to a full CAD model and drawings a factory can build from.
- Calculate loads, stiffness, torque, heat and tolerances before anything is made.
- Machine and 3D print your own prototypes, test them, and improve the design.
- Cut part count, assembly time and cost.
- Work with our factories and suppliers from the start of the project.
- Plan the tests (drop, vibration, weather, life cycle) and decide what passes.
What you bring
- Led the mechanical design of a product that shipped and sold.
- Strong physics and maths. You calculate, not guess.
- Expert 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion 360, Inventor, NX or similar) and tolerance stack-ups.
- Deep in injection molding and tooling, or sheet metal, weldments and steel fabrication.
- CNC programming, DFM/DFA, and real time on the shop floor.
- AI-native. You use AI daily and have designed something real with it.
How you'll work
You report to the Hardware Lead and work side by side with electronics and firmware.
What we offer
- Competitive salary package with full medical and dental coverage.
- Flexible working time and a fast-moving team environment.
- Free lunch, snacks, and coffee at the office.
- Unlimited sick leave, official holidays, and at least 12 paid days off annually.
- MacBook, laptop, monitor, standing desk, and the tools you need to do your best work.
- Access to online courses and AI tools that help you work better.
