JOB SUMMARY
The Nurse Manager (NM) leads the nursing team within the SCH under their charge to provide safe, high quality, efficient and cost-effective care to residents and their families.
JOB SCOPE
1 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for overseeing the operations and staff of their designated wards. In the absence of a Senior Nurse Manager, the Nurse Manager deputises for the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON).
Supervises the team of registered nurses, enrolled nurses, nursing aides, healthcare assistants and health attendants. This may include oversight of multi-disciplinary care providers such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, therapy aides, nursing students, volunteers and others.
Plans, manages, coordinates and supervises resident care-related activities in consultation with the ADON or DON to ensure that they are in line with the nursing home (SCH) vision and mission.
The NM also articulates the values of the SCH to lead and manage the conduct and relationships of staff in the delivery of competent, safe, compassionate and holistic nursing care to residents.
2 QUALITY AND SAFE CARE
Responsible for compliance of all nursing standards as stipulated by Ministry of Health and Singapore Nursing Board.
Oversees and be responsible for the daily operations of the nursing home (NH).
Leads and manages the clinical staffs in delivering excellent clinical and service qualities.
Leads quality assurance activities to monitor and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of nursing care. Ensures quality audits are planned and conducted periodically and follow up with areas for corrective improvements.
Promotes evidence-based practices or nursing care delivery.
Supervises and provides clinical guidance to the healthcare team by:
Being actively involved in direct resident care, when required.
Identifying and presenting resident care issues for professional transdisciplinary discussions at clinical leads meeting, quality assurance and other meeting platforms.
3 CARE DELIVERY
Conducts nursing rounds to identify clinical and service issue with the aim of addressing and closing gaps in care.
Communicates and collaborates with intra- and inter-departmental staff, residents and relatives to ensure care coordination and integration.
Supervises care of the residents to ensure compliance to Enhanced Nursing Home Standards (ENHS) and Healthcare Services Act (HCSA) regulations.
Works with staff at bedside to:
Reinforce basic principles on the delivery of nursing care and performance of nursing procedures.
Ensure that care is safe and appropriate based on current medical-gerontology and infection control knowledge and practices.
Implement strategies and workplans to optimise the delivery of clinical care.
Evaluates and plans the objectives accordingly to the operational and financial aspects/targets.
Evaluates and enhances internal work processes and practices.
Serves as a resource person and provides clinical expertise to the healthcare team on professional and nursing matters.
Acts as a role model in clinical practice. Initiates clinical quality improvement and research activities to enhance resident care management and improve practices.
Reaches out proactively to residents and their families regarding care needs.
4 STAFF RESOURCES AND MANAGEMENT
Ensures appropriate skills mix and adequate manpower resourcing for all shifts and types of services.
Able to harness the team’s cooperation and inspire them to give safe and coordinated care to residents.
Supports and promote fairness in the workplace to create an environment where all staff feel safe and engaged in their roles.
Delegates work assignment and resident allocation in ensuring fair and equitable distribution of workload. Ensures staff can cope with their allocated resident load.
In the event of staffing shortages, the NM is required to assist with resident care when necessary.
5 STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Guides orientation/induction programmes and preceptorship for all new staff.
Develop staff competencies, promote clinical contributions and effectively appraise them.
Conducts continuous assessment and evaluation of staff’s clinical performance and professional conduct. Provides feedback and guides staff towards improvements in clinical and service performance.
Identify suitable staff and makes recommendations to the DON for their professional development opportunities, skills and competency upgrading through various opportunities. These may include formal education, in-house training or approved online learning programmes.
Acts as a role model in clinical practice. Initiates clinical quality improvement and research activities to enhance resident care management and improve practices.
Supports the DON/ADON in nursing home management.
Deputises for the ADON during his/her absence.
6 GENERAL
Educates staff on the appropriate usage of resources and equipment to enhance quality of care.
Participates in in-service teaching to the nursing and ancillary staff.
Attends continuing education / in-services on a regular basis to maintain skills competency.
Participates in the SCH’s and nursing committees as assigned.
Participates in discussions using evidence-based nursing knowledge practices to change out-dated practices and improve the delivery of resident care.
Discusses, develops and implements strategies for staff retention in consultation with the DON and ADON.
Be a role model to other staff.
Carries out any other duties/projects as assigned by the supervisor.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
A) EDUCATIONAL, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Registered Nurse with current SNB Registration.
Locally trained:
Degree in Nursing or equivalent (health-related).
Advanced Diploma in Clinical Nursing.
Minimum five years (for Nurse Manager position) of working experience in a similar position in a medium or large-sized Nursing Home in Singapore
Foreign-trained:
Degree in Nursing with Board Pass (Professional Regulation Council [PRC]).
Minimum of 10 years progressive clinical and administrative acute care experience in Singapore.
Evidence of continued professional development.
B) OTHERS
Strong clinical knowledge and sound nursing judgement.
Good understanding of MOH, SNB, HCSA and ENHS requirements.
Excellent leadership, coaching and people management skills.
Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
Good analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
