Zoom in on Scoot’s work culture through the eyes of their IT and Distribution senior specialists: Pei Ying and Lu Pinn

In line with our Unicorn Opportunities campaign, we’re bringing you folks yet another interview jam-packed with exciting details on working at Scoot. This time, we’ve got two specialists from Distribution and Information Technology respectively – Lu Pinn and Pei Ying. While Distribution is a commercial team, it works closely with IT (an operations team) frequently, and in many ways. Read on to find out more about the two roles!

First up is Pei Ying!

Could you give us a little background on how you joined Scoot in your current role as Senior Analyst, IT (Corporate Application Delivery)?

PY: I worked as a Software Developer before joining and working at Scoot in this first and current role. The decision to join Scoot came from a desire to transit from the role of a Developer to a Business Analyst. I was also attracted to the opportunity to learn and grow that Scoot was (and still is) offering.

What do you do and what does a typical day in your role encompass?

PY: Make magic happen. At Corp Apps Delivery, we receive requests from various departments (i.e. HR, Cabin Services, Flight Operations) to implement IT solutions and facilitate internal business processes.

Our day-to-day duties vary and depend on the stage of the projects. I spend a lot of my time talking to different departments to understand their business processes and issues. I’ll then analyse the information gathered to design a solution. Implementation will be executed by the team or an external vendor.

What is the size of the IT team at Scoot, and could you give us an overview of the different functions?

PY: Currently there are about 30 of us. As Scoot continues to expand, so will the IT team, and we are looking for more individuals with the right attitude to join us. Here’s a snapshot of the different functions in the team:

Corp Application Delivery: Deploy, manage and support systems that facilitate internal business processes.

IT Operations: Maintain IT infrastructure and networks.

IT Security: Protect IT systems, maintains standard information security policies, procedures, and services.

Information Management: Govern company data and maintains data reporting tools.

In-house Web and Mobile Development Team: Develop and support Scoot’s booking site.

What is it about your job at Scoot that you love so much?

PY: Job satisfaction – working at Scoot is interesting, challenging and rewarding. I feel I am appreciated and I’m allowed to take initiative to get things done. I work in a great team and my boss honestly cares for his employees and is supportive of our decisions. Of course, discounted staff travel is the one of the best perks of working for an airline.

What are some words you would use to describe the community/environment at Scoot?

PY: Fun, friendly, unconventional.

Any words of advice to those looking to pursue a career in this field?

PY: Besides possessing the right technical skills, soft skills are also important in developing your career in IT, no matter where you plan on going within IT. Those who wish to pursue IT careers must be flexible and open to changes because technology is always changing, so be prepared for rapidly changing tools and trends. Be willing to consider new ideas rather than just dismissing them. Communication and interpersonal skills are critical in developing a career, so don’t neglect your people skills.

Sweet advice. Who said IT was boring and dull? Now it’s Lu Pinn’s time to shine!

Could you give us a little background on how you joined Scoot in your current role as a Senior Specialist for Distribution?

LP: I was a vendor with a software house prior to working at Scoot. My interest in pursuing a career in the airline industry was the trigger that led to me applying for this position.

What is Distribution?

LP: Our team has a few functions. Firstly, we create innovative technical solutions to implement and distribute various rules and fees (such as baggage fees) to the different airline channels (e.g. website, travel agents, call centres). We also implement technical roll-outs to ensure our systems meet industry regulations. We support our stakeholders and facilitate the use of our core backend booking system through regular maintenance and helping to resolve complex issues and attending to day-to-day queries.

What do you do and what does a typical day in your role encompass?

LP: I administer, configure and maintain our main reservations system and ancillary products. Due to the nature of my work there’s never really a typical day. There’s always something new to get my teeth into, whether it’s a new requirement, issues to fix, etc. I will say that the role is challenging yet exciting!

What is it about your job at Scoot that you love so much?

LP: Yes! The unlimited discounted sub-load tickets for employees enables me to travel frequently.

What are some words you would use to describe the community/environment at Scoot?

LP: FUN and very casual working environment, i.e. we can come to work in shorts and flip flops.

Any words of advice to those looking to pursue a career in this field?

LP: Grab your chance, now or never! 😃

Working at Scoot sounds like a dream. Who would pass up the chance for discounted airfares?
