Through the lens of Shopee’s Data Scientist and Product Management Associate: Li Zixuan, Jiao Yiqiang

In line with our Unicorn Opportunities, we’ve got more awesome insights for you, straight from the heart of Shopee: its people! For those curious about working at Shopee, Zixuan shares what it’s like to be a data scientist at Shopee alongside product management associate Yiqiang. If you’ve been considering a career in a fast-growing e-Commerce startup, you’ll want to take a peek at this.

How did you get to where you are now?

Z: Upon my graduation from NTU with a few offers on hand, I decided to join Shopee’s Regional Business Intelligence team. I believed the role aligned with my interests and background in computing and business. It was still the early stage when I joined the Shopee family, which gave me the chance to take up lots of challenges and opportunities to learn and grow.

Soon, due to business needs, the Data Science team was set up. I transferred from the Data Analyst role to the Data Scientist role. A year as a data analyst gave me strong foundations – so becoming a data scientist gave me lots of excitement and more space to grow. Now I’m enjoying my work with the Data Science team!

What do you like most about your job?

Z: Truthfully, I love everything about my job. Having a great leader and a group of lovely colleagues makes me feel blessed. On top of that, I am really satisfied when I can truly feel I am growing and contributing to the company.

In Shopee Data Science, there are many interesting projects that allow you to pick up new skills, explore new research findings, and eventually see your contributions pushing the business forward.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Z: Working at Shopee starts with a delicious and energetic breakfast at work, which makes my whole day beautiful. In the morning, I usually start my work with a quick daily plan, then dive into it and get things cleared one by one.

After lunch, we may DIY a drink for ourselves to start off the afternoon work. Don’t be scared off by the 5-hour afternoon session – time flies when you have meetings and snacks. You can even go for a massage to refresh yourself! After work, I usually go for running, which relaxes my mind and allows me to space out.

What words will you use to describe Shopee’s work environment/community?

Z: It is young, dynamic and full of opportunities.

Any words of advice for those looking to follow your steps life-/career-wise?

Z: Take a look at what choices you have and go with the one that follows your heart. Sometimes we tend to think too much, but actually all we need to do is to make full use of what we have now and run for our dreams. Ultimately, we will achieve it.

What an inspiring outlook. If you’re eager to find out more about working at Shopee, check out Yiqiang’s interview segment below!

How did you get to where you are now?

Y: When it came to the end of my undergraduate studies, I started looking for all kinds of opportunities. Though my major is in data analytics, my interest is in solving actual problems using data. I found this product management role in Shopee that would  allow me to use data to create product designs for the e-commerce industry. It made me feel energetic and challenged; that’s when I decided to make a move here and start working at Shopee.

What do you like most about your job?

Y: Shopee, as an e-Commerce app, is widely used by millions of users across Southeast Asia. When  I’m contributing to the industry in my capacity, I’m impacting millions of users’ lives in the most visible and most likely positive way. People’s lives have become easier and happier after they started using Shopee. And they’re using a feature designed by me! I work from start to finish, understand user pain points, design solutions, implement them, and launch them. It’s the most fulfilling process – and it gives me a lot of satisfaction.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Y: I wake up around 8.30AM and leave for the bus at around 9AM. If the bus app shows that my bus is going to take more than 3 minutes, I drop by McDonald’s for some breakfast. I arrive in the office at 9.30AM and start browsing emails, along with processing small requests and bug fixes. At 10AM or 10.30AM, my first meeting of the day begins. Such meetings usually happen four to five times a day, each lasting half an hour to an hour. They could be about discussing product solutions internally, working on designs, comparing technical solutions and their impact with developers and QAs, and understanding requests from the business team. Outside meetings, time is often filled up by ad-hoc discussions, or quick follow-ups of the meetings above. Time will quickly come to 7.30PM , and that’s when I’ll focus on writing product requirement documents (PRDs). At around 8.30PM to 9PM, I usually have dinner with my roommate, who works nearby, before heading back home together.

What words will you use to describe Shopee’s work environment/community?

Y: Energetic, challenging, rewarding.

Any words of advice for those looking to follow your steps life-/career-wise?

Y: If you love to solve problems, provide solutions, and really enjoy getting your hands dirty, this is a place that will reward you for it. I would suggest that every young person pursues their interests, because when you enjoy what you’re doing, everything becomes rewarding. I don’t think there are easy jobs – only those where you’re willing to constantly learn from.
