We’ve got another Earn and Learn Programme interview for you curious cats out there. Introducing Dexter!
Tell us more about yourself!
Hi, I am DexterCJR and I graduated from SP with a Diploma in Visual Effects and Motion Graphic. I like to sleep, “chill” and I enjoy my “me” time most 🙂
My dream is to be a Gaffer. Unfortunately, it seems that my dream is swerving away when I failed to make it to Film Sound Video at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. But, I found another path and this is where my journey to becoming a Gaffer begins.
Do you remember the time when you graduated, and you were thinking about the next step? What was going through your head?
After graduation, I was very happy because I finally had time to do the things I like – creating Youtube content such as vlogs. I was a freelance Production Assistant and I took up my own video projects. At the same time, I was also working part-time at J Rental Center (JRC) to expose myself to more video equipment. It was a great decision and I regularly use my free time to network with the JRC team to learn more about the career.
What made you decide on the Earn and Learn Programme, eventually?
I got to know about Earn and Learn Programme through my JRC boss, Jeshua. He introduced the Digital Marketing programme to me and shared that it was very useful and relevant to what I was interested in. I was very afraid then because digital marketing was totally new to me and I have never tried anything outside of media.
Eventually, I decided to take up the Earn and Learn Programme opportunity. Main reason being that I wanted a stable full-time income. Also, I wanted to have a new start and to learn new skills while I am still young.
How do you find your Earn and Learn Programme experience?
Before this programme, I was simply a part-timer issuing out equipment. Through this programme, I got exposed to Digital Marketing and the work that a Digital Marketer does. Initially, i found it difficult to handle. But as days passed by, I started getting the hang of it. I now look at companies and startups very differently.
Could you share some advice to your juniors who are deciding on the next step after graduation?
Before you even sign up for any course, do a read up, watch youtube and even ask those who are in that industry.
Because asking is Free Of Charge and won’t cost you anything. So just be daring to ask.
ELP helps me to widen my career options before I settle down on which path I want to take. I highly recommend fresh graduates to try this out if you’re still discovering and are open to new opportunities. If you want to try it, the time is now! Do it before you regret. Otherwise, it’ll be too late!
