5 Quick and Easy Ways To Be Career Ready

If you think that there’s always time to do some career planning and preparation after your school graduation, you couldn’t be more wrong. The competitiveness of the job market in today’s world forces fresh job applicants like yourself to possess knowledge, skills and even experiences which will be able to make you shine in comparison to your peers. This essentially means that you will need to have a rough idea of what industry you are interested in; then gear your learning toward that area, all while you’re still a student.

The whole idea of career preparation and planning can be extremely daunting and scary, especially for someone who has never held a job before. We feel you, fresh graduates! So we’ve decided to help you out a little with 5 quick and easy ways to help you be career ready.

1: Identify Role Models

Do you look up to anyone? Perhaps someone whom you admire and would totally kill to have a job as awesome as theirs? Learning about how your role model attained success can serve both as an inspiration and also as motivation for yourself. Driving yourself to achieve the same things; or even more, as your role model will push you out of your comfort zone. That’s where we all know the magic happens.

So, identify several role models which you look up to in the industry which you are interested in, and let them serve as motivation for you to strive further and better.

2: Develop a career plan

Proper planning for a career involves four major steps: Self Assessment, Career Exploration, Match and finally, Action. You can go through these steps alone but you’re highly encouraged to consult with your career advisers who are always available and willing to help out in your school. They will be able to point you in the right direction leading you to have a clearer idea of what your path will be like. A more in-depth explanation of a career plan development can be read here.

3: Search for occupations which match your skills and interests

There are plenty of career options available in the job market; each suited for very different and particular set of skills and interests. After having developed a comprehensive career plan where you have gained a deeper understanding of your interests and skills, it is time to search for occupations which you are best suited for.

Knowing the various options available to you will be of great help because they can potentially point out your own shortcomings and aid you in improving on yourself. For example, if you are interested in working in the Human Resources department but you are unable to perform a skill which is required across all job listings, then it is a sign to pick up that skill.

4: Draft a Resume

It is always a wise idea to be constantly working on a draft of your resume, even if you are not planning to apply for a job any time soon. This is because your resume will provide you with a very clear picture of where you are currently at and how far you still have to go before you are able to secure a job at your dream company. Who knows, you might randomly bump into a big-shot at a company who might want to invite you to join their company. You wouldn’t want to rush out your resume at the very last minute then, would you?

5: Develop Interview Skills

Imagine the CEO of a big company gives you an interview chance with him. Would you want to be totally unprepared? No way right? Be aware of the common questions which might be asked during interviews and be sure to craft a couple of answers to each of the questions. I would advice practicing with family or friends to identify nervous behavior and bad habits.

It is also important to know how you can make a great first impression on the hiring manager. This comes down to your dressing, grooming and even handshake.

And there, once you have gone through the 5 steps as listed above, we are sure that you would be more than career ready to be employed in your dream job!

Already career ready? Apply for these jobs now!
