5 interview questions you’ll be asked as a junior UX/UI designer & how to tackle them

So you’ve come a long way. You have pulled up all-nighters, chugged expresso like water when you are learning about UX/UI design and now, having completed your studies, it’s time for you join the UX/UI design industry. You may feel slightly nervous about entering the working world but you have snagged a couple of interviews for the position of a junior UX/UI designer. Now, how do you go about acing the interview and clinching that job? Do you even know what interview questions for UX/UI designers include?

In this article, we will tell you 5 common questions that you may be asked as a junior UX/UI designer and give you some tips as to how you can tackle these questions.

 

1. “Tell us about how you handle conflicts.”

Being a good junior UX/UI designer also encompasses being able to communicate well and diplomatically. Sometimes, you may get a client who may not like your UX/UI design and with that, you’re going to be dealing with criticisms. Expect interview questions for UX/UI designers to include this huge one.

The interviewer may ask you this question to see how you are able to deal with critics and stress that may come in your way as a junior designer To tackle this question, tell them how you were able to handle conflicts in the past  and what the outcome was. It could be a project you’ve done regarding UX/UI or really, any previous school/work experiences in which you had to deal with difficult clients would work fine too.  

 

2. “Why should we hire you?”

This question is common in any interview – so expect that this will be included in interview questions for UX/UI designers. 

The way to prepare yourself for such questions? Look up on the company’s missions and the type of projects they do before you head for the interview. During the interview, let them know about how the company’s mission fit into your career goals. Also, you have to remember that the company must know how you can add value to their team. So let them know how you can contribute to your company’s portfolio, and how your skills, experience and knowledge will be able to complement and benefit your company.

If you have an internship, then it would be better for you to describe any relevant experiences! If not, you can also do a portfolio on the side. It’s never too late to learn UX/UI design by yourself to create a portfolio if you’re really into it.

Remember to also show that you’re enthusiastic and passionate about working for them. Letting them know that you’ve got a good attitude would be major plus points as well!

 

3. “What is a website that has a good UI design in your opinion?”

In this question, the interviewer is probably looking out for your personal style and the kind of designs that catches your eye. Was the interface clear, intuitive or visually appealing? What did you like about it? Besides describing the features and the aesthetics of the website, remember to tell them why and how the elements come together seamlessly to help the website achieved its goal. You can also put yourself in the shoes of the user and explain how the features enhance the user interface and the user experience.

 

4. “What do you think are the traits of a good UX/UI designer?”

There’s no right or wrong answers for this question and you can probably list down the traits of your favourite UX/UI designers. But a lot of time, you would realized that good UX/UI designers have a few common key traits. These are just a few to get you started:

  •             The ability to be empathetic, which allows UX/UI designers to put themselves in the shoes of their clients and customers to create a user-centric product
  •             To have foresight, which allows UX/UI designers to predict and understand users’ behavior
  •             Being up to date and knowledgeable, which UX/UI designers to know about the latest UX/UI trends and incorporate them into their work
  •             Being humble! And always willing to listen and improve.  

 

5. “What are the latest UX/UI trends?”

Interviewers may be asking this question to figure out if you are really passionate about UX/UI and if you are up to date with the latest tools and kits. Before you attend your research, go do some prep work on what may be the future of UI/UX – is it the use of virtual reality or the development of a tool that allows you to save time and not code? This is the time for you to show that you are knowledgeable about the industry. As a junior UX/UI designer, you may not have much real-life working experiences. However, by providing your thoughts on these trends, it shows the interviewers that you are thinking critically and seriously about these trends. This would definitely impress the panel.
