Job description for Software Engineer at Applied Materials
We are developing a manufacturing data and applications platform to support digitalization and automation across the organization. The role begins with building the foundational data layer—designing databases, pipelines, and system integrations—and progressively expands into developing business logic, backend services, and user‑facing applications on a modern manufacturing app platform. This position is well‑suited to an engineer who has demonstrable experience delivering production web applications to internal users, is comfortable working close to operations, and is eager to grow into a full‑stack role spanning data engineering, backend/API development, and front‑end application development.
Responsibilities
1) Data Foundations & Engineering
Design and evolve a maintainable relational or structured data model suitable for hierarchical manufacturing data.
Build and maintain data ingestion and transformation processes.
Establish reliable technical integrations with manufacturing applications, including:
Understanding source data structures and interfaces
Implementing stable connectors for recurring data acquisition
Handling schema or data format changes
Setting up integrity checks, alerting, and automated recovery
2) Backend & Business Logic Development
Develop backend services that implement core business logic for manufacturing business process flows.
Collaborate with solution and application developers to translate requirements into actionable business logic design for prototyping.
Build and maintain APIs or service endpoints used by downstream applications.
Create reusable software components for consistent data access, validation, and transformation.
Ensure backend components are secure, performant, and scalable.
Ensure audit trail functionalities for data transformation events.
3) Front-End / Application Development
Build user-facing applications on a modern manufacturing app platform software.
Integrate applications with backend services, connectors, and data sources.
Develop custom interface logic or extensions as needed.
Collaborate with manufacturing users to refine UI/UX and workflow behavior.
4) Quality, Reliability & Operational Excellence
Implement data quality checks such as referential integrity, anomaly detection, and completeness validation.
Build resilience mechanisms into pipelines and services, including:
Automated retries
Fallback strategies
Exception logging and diagnostics
Monitor application and pipeline performance, availability, and data freshness.
Produce QA summaries and reports for approval to Go Live.
5) Documentation & Engineering Practices
Maintain technical documentation and diagrams for data flows, integrations, system logic, and API specifications.
Participate in code reviews, testing, and continuous improvement of engineering standards.
Produce operational guides, runbooks, and troubleshooting procedures.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
Track record of building and maintaining in‑house, multi‑user, web‑based applications for internal stakeholders (e.g., portals, operational tools, or workflow apps).
Strong programming fundamentals with hands‑on experience in at least one general‑purpose language (e.g., Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, or equivalent).
Solid SQL skills and practical experience designing or maintaining relational databases.
Experience developing APIs or backend services (authentication/authorization, data access patterns, performance).
Hands‑on experience integrating with external systems, databases, or APIs in a production environment.
Working knowledge of enterprise operational data concepts (e.g., data contracts, lineage, quality checks, scheduling, and monitoring)—even if not from an engineering/manufacturing domain.
UI/UX fundamentals sufficient to build intuitive, task‑oriented user interfaces and to iterate quickly with users (layout, usability, accessibility considerations).
Good engineering hygiene: testing, Git, CI/CD, and writing clean, modular, well‑documented code.
Ability to break down ambiguous requirements and ship maintainable solutions in iterative increments.
Soft Skills & Working Style
Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a cross‑functional environment.
Clear, succinct communication with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Organized, detail‑oriented, and committed to documentation and maintainability.
Hands-on approach to concept ideation with short turnaround functional prototypes.
Growth mindset—willing to learn new tools, platforms (including low‑code), and manufacturing domain concepts.
Ability to manage time effectively and adapt to changing priorities.
Nice-to-Have (Plus)
Exposure to manufacturing/engineering systems or data.
Familiarity with front‑end frameworks or UI‑centric development.
Experience with BI tools (e.g., Power BI).
Background in data governance or metadata management.
Experience with workflow automation or low‑code platforms (e.g., Tulip, Power Apps, Mendix).
Familiarity with cloud or containerization concepts.
