About PT Aerae
PT Aerae Manufacturing Indonesia is a foreign-owned (PT PMA) advanced manufacturing and R&D company establishing its facility in Batam. We develop systems using high-performance polymers, 3D printing and conventional machined parts. Our Batam workshop is being built from the ground up, and the Workshop Manager will be a founding member of the local team.
The Role
You will run the day-to-day operation of our prototype and production workshop: the people, the machines, the tooling, the materials, and the safety culture. You are a hands-on machinist and fabricator who has grown into supervising others — comfortable at a lathe or mill in the morning and planning next week’s work, maintenance and purchasing in the afternoon. You will work closely with our expatriate Chief Prototype Machinist and Chief Engineer, translating engineering intent into finished parts and keeping the workshop running safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop operations
• Plan, schedule and supervise daily workshop activities across machining, fabrication, assembly and test-rig builds
• Machine and fabricate prototype parts yourself when needed (manual and CNC)
• Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models and tolerances; advise engineers on manufacturability
• Maintain quality: inspection, measurement, first-article checks, and disciplined documentation
Tools, equipment and facility
• Own the tool crib: inventory, calibration, storage, issue/return, consumables replenishment
• Set up, commission and maintain workshop machinery (lathes, mills, drills, saws, grinders, welding, compressors, hand and power tools); manage preventive-maintenance schedules
• Coordinate statutory equipment inspections (riksa uji) for pressure vessels, lifting gear and other regulated equipment
• Support installation of new equipment and workshop layout as the facility expands
Safety (K3) and compliance
• Lead the workshop’s K3 (Keselamatan dan Kesehatan Kerja) programme: risk assessments, PPE, permit-to-work, LOTO, housekeeping (5S), incident reporting
• Ensure safe handling and storage of chemicals, gases and flammables in line with SDS and Indonesian regulations
• Keep the workshop audit-ready for kawasan industri, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan and Disnaker requirements
People
• Recruit, train and supervise technicians, machinists and helpers; set standards and coach
• Manage shift rosters, overtime and attendance in line with Indonesian manpower law
• Act as the primary Bahasa Indonesia ↔ English bridge between local staff and expatriate engineers
Procurement and logistics
• Source tooling, consumables, raw material (metals, plastics, composites) and services from Batam, Indonesian and overseas suppliers
• Support import/export paperwork for workshop equipment within the Batam FTZ, working with our customs broker (PPJK)
Personal Attributes
• Practical problem-solver who leads by example on the shop floor
• Meticulous about safety, tidiness and tool care
• Comfortable with ambiguity and rapid iteration typical of an R&D start-up
• Honest, reliable, and able to give straight feedback to senior engineers
What We Offer
• Founding role in a well-backed deep-tech company with an international team
• Competitive salary commensurate with experience
• BPJS Kesehatan and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, THR and statutory benefits
• Training and development, including exposure to advanced materials and aerospace systems
• Permanent role on the team
