Job Summary:
Steward plays an essential role in maintaining cleanliness, organization, and hygiene standards within the kitchen and dining areas of a restaurant, hotel, or other food service establishments. This position involves cleaning dishes, utensils, kitchen equipment, and ensuring that the kitchen environment remains organized and sanitary. Stewards assist kitchen staff by ensuring that all equipment is ready for use, waste is managed properly, and the overall kitchen or dining area is clean and efficient. This role requires attention to detail, the ability to work quickly, and a strong focus on maintaining health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Dishwashing and Cleaning:
- Washing Dishes and Utensils: Wash dishes, glassware, pots, pans, and utensils used during food preparation and service, ensuring that all items are cleaned and sanitized properly.
- Maintaining Dishwashing Equipment: Operate dishwashing machines or manually wash dishes, ensuring that they are in working order and cleaned thoroughly.
- Drying and Storing Dishes: Dry clean dishes, utensils, and kitchenware, and store them in the proper areas to ensure easy access and prevent contamination.
- Cleaning Kitchen Equipment: Clean kitchen equipment (such as ovens, grills, fryers, and refrigerators) and ensure that they are sanitized, organized, and ready for use.
Kitchen Area Hygiene:
- Maintaining Cleanliness: Ensure that the kitchen& storage areas are clean, safe, and organized throughout the day.
- Sweeping and Mopping Floors: Sweep and mop floors in the kitchen areas to remove debris and ensure hygiene standards are maintained.
- Sanitizing Surfaces: Regularly sanitize countertops, prep areas, and other high-touch surfaces to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Waste Disposal: Handle waste disposal in accordance with company policies, ensuring that trash bins are emptied regularly and that food waste is disposed of correctly.
Supporting Kitchen Operations:
- Stocking and Organizing: Assist in organizing and stocking kitchen supplies, such as cleaning products, kitchen utensils, and non-perishable items. Ensure that storage areas are properly organized and that inventory is well-managed.
- Assisting with Food Preparation: While primarily a cleaning role, stewards may assist the kitchen staff with basic food preparation tasks, such as chopping vegetables or preparing ingredients, depending on the establishment's needs.
- Supporting Kitchen Staff: Help kitchen staff with setting up workstations, cleaning after meal preparation, and clearing used equipment after cooking.
- Health and Safety Compliance:
- Following Hygiene Standards: Adhere to health and safety regulations regarding food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness, including handling food items properly and using cleaning products safely.
- Ensuring Compliance: Follow all safety protocols when using chemicals for cleaning or operating kitchen equipment. This includes wearing gloves, aprons, and any other personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Report Maintenance Issues: Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or cleaning needs to the appropriate supervisor or manager to maintain a safe working environment.
Ad-hoc Duties:
- Support with Special Events: Assist in cleaning and setting up for special events, banquets, or catering orders.
- Assisting in Stocktaking: Help with inventory and stocktaking of kitchen supplies or cleaning materials.
- Assisting with Deliveries: Help with receiving deliveries of kitchen supplies or food items, ensuring they are stored in the appropriate places.
