About the Role
As a Senior Product Development Designer, you will take ownership of the development of new physical products from initial concept through sampling and production.
You will work across a diverse range of character-driven consumer products, translating characters, visual identities, and creative concepts into commercially appealing physical products. This is a highly hands-on role involving concept development, sketching, product visualization, specifications, sampling, prototyping, revisions, and direct communication with manufacturers and suppliers.
You will be expected to work independently, manage multiple product-development projects, solve design and production challenges, and ensure that products meet the intended creative direction, quality standards, and commercial objectives.
You will also contribute creative ideas for new products, collections, and categories, while helping establish and maintain product design standards across the company’s portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design and development of new products from initial concept through sampling and production
* Develop concepts for plush, toys, accessories, apparel, stationery, gifts, collectibles, and other consumer products
* Translate existing characters, artwork, and visual identities into commercially viable physical products
* Develop original product concepts, product variations, collections, and new product categories
* Create detailed sketches, product renderings, colorways, variations, and design presentations
* Develop seasonal, themed, and coordinated product collections
* Create comprehensive product specification sheets, production artwork, and design documentation
* Prepare clear and accurate measurements, materials, colors, construction details, finishes, and production instructions
* Communicate directly with manufacturers and suppliers throughout the product development process
* Provide clear technical and visual direction to manufacturers to ensure the intended design is accurately produced
* Review prototypes, samples, and pre-production products for design accuracy, quality, proportion, materials, colors, and overall appearance
* Identify design and production issues and propose practical solutions
* Provide detailed revision feedback and manage multiple rounds of sampling until products are production-ready
* Balance creative ambition with manufacturing feasibility, cost considerations, materials, and production limitations
* Maintain consistency across product collections and ensure designs align with the company’s visual identity
* Work closely with graphic designers, marketing, product, and other creative team members to ensure cohesive product development
* Manage multiple product-development projects, timelines, revisions, and production deadlines
* Take ownership of projects and proactively communicate progress, risks, and potential delays
* Help establish product-development processes, documentation standards, and best practices
* Provide creative guidance and support to junior designers or other team members when required
About You
* 4+ years of professional experience in product design, industrial design, toy design, character design, product development, illustration, consumer products, or a related field
* Strong portfolio demonstrating physical product design and development, preferably across multiple consumer product categories
* Strong drawing, sketching, visualization, and concept-development skills
* Strong understanding of product proportions, materials, construction, color, finishes, and product aesthetics
* Good understanding of how creative concepts are translated into manufacturable physical products
* Experience working with manufacturers, suppliers, factories, or production teams
* Experience developing product specifications, technical drawings, production artwork, or product documentation
* Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop; additional 3D, CAD, or product-visualization software is a plus
* Ability to communicate design intent clearly through sketches, renderings, specifications, and visual references
* Strong understanding of manufacturing constraints and the ability to adapt designs while protecting the core creative concept
* Strong attention to detail and a high standard for product quality
* Strong organizational and project-management skills
* Ability to manage multiple projects, sampling rounds, and deadlines simultaneously
* Comfortable taking ownership of projects and working independently with minimal supervision
* Strong communication and problem-solving skills
* Able to give and receive constructive feedback and work through multiple rounds of revisions
* Commercially minded, with an understanding of how design decisions can impact product appeal, cost, production, and marketability
* Experience working with character-driven brands, licensed characters, toys, plush, collectibles, or lifestyle products is a strong advantage
* Experience mentoring junior designers or providing creative direction is a plus
