About PT Aerae
PT Aerae Manufacturing Indonesia is a foreign-owned (PT PMA) advanced manufacturing and R&D company establishing its facility in Batam. We work with composites and other advanced materials to develop lightweight, high-performance structures for confidential commercial applications. Our Batam engineering and prototype facility is being built from the ground up, and the Composites Layup Engineer will be an early member of the technical team.
The Role
You will design and build lightweight composite structures for our R&D programmes: structural members, equipment housings and enclosures, aerodynamic surfaces, load-bearing fittings that interface with flexible and metallic components, and the tooling to make them. This is a hands-on design-and-make role. You will take parts from concept and laminate design through mould/tool design, layup, cure, trimming, bonding and assembly, and then test what you built. You will work directly with our Chief Engineer and Chief Prototype Machinist, and you will help set up the composites workshop — layup room, cure equipment, vacuum systems, consumables and process documentation — from an empty floor.
We are looking for someone who has personally designed composite parts and then made them, not someone who has only done one or the other. If you have strong fundamentals in laminate design and shop practice but have not worked in aerospace before, we would still like to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Design
• Design composite parts and assemblies: laminate schedules, ply orientation, core selection, ply drops, joints and bonded/bolted attachments
• Perform structural sizing using classical laminate theory and FEA; produce stress and weight budgets and document assumptions
• Produce 3D CAD, ply books, drawings, and manufacturing/inspection documentation
• Design moulds, mandrels, layup tools, trim fixtures and bonding jigs; specify tooling materials and surface finishes
• Select fibres, resin systems, cores, adhesives and consumables; evaluate suppliers and manage material data sheets and shelf life
Manufacturing
• Perform and supervise hand layup, vacuum bagging, resin infusion, prepreg layup and oven cure; wet-layup and room-temperature cure where appropriate
• Set up and operate the composites workshop: clean room / layup area, oven, vacuum pumps, ply cutter, trimming and finishing equipment
• Write process specifications, cure schedules and work instructions; train technicians and control process discipline
• Trim, drill, bond and assemble composite parts; integrate with metallic fittings, flexible materials and electronics
Test and quality
• Plan and execute coupon and component tests (tensile, flex, shear, bonded-joint, environmental); correlate results with design
• Carry out inspection and NDI appropriate to the part (visual, tap test, ultrasonic where available); disposition defects and repairs
• Maintain traceability: material batch records, cure logs, non-conformance and rework records
Safety (K3) and workshop
• Own safe handling of resins, hardeners, solvents and fibre dust in line with SDS and Indonesian K3 requirements: ventilation, PPE, storage, waste disposal
• Maintain the composites area to 5S standards and support statutory equipment inspections where applicable
Requirements
Essential
• Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Materials Engineering or related field (S1 / Bachelor's or higher)
• 5+ years' experience designing and manufacturing composite structures, with a portfolio of parts you designed and personally laid up
• Hands-on proficiency in hand layup, vacuum bagging and at least one of: prepreg/oven cure, resin infusion, or RTM
• Solid understanding of laminate mechanics, failure modes, bonded joints and core sandwich design
• CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360 or similar); working knowledge of FEA for composites (e.g. Ansys ACP, Abaqus, Nastran, HyperWorks)
• Experience designing and building composite tooling
• Able to write clear process documentation and test reports in English; professional-level spoken and written English
• Willing to be based in Batam full-time
Desirable
• Aerospace, UAV, wind blade, motorsport or high-performance marine composites background (e.g. PT Dirgantara Indonesia, GMF, UAV manufacturers, FRP boatbuilders, wind-energy suppliers)
• Experience with carbon/epoxy prepreg, out-of-autoclave processing, and lightweight sandwich structures
• Experience with fabric-to-composite or film-to-composite interfaces and flexible-to-rigid joints
• Experience setting up a composites workshop or qualifying a new process
• Familiarity with Indonesian K3 requirements and hazardous-material handling; Ahli K3 certification an advantage
• Bahasa Indonesia fluency (helpful for working with local technicians; not essential for expatriate candidates)
