Job description for SENIOR VETERINARIAN/ SENIOR SCIENTIST (FISH HEALTH) at Public Service Division, Singapore Government

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team at the Marine Aquaculture Centre (MAC) to implement and advance fish health protocols, drive translatable R&D initiatives, and work closely with the aquaculture industry to refine culture techniques and animal husbandry practices that improve overall fish health management outcomes. As a veterinarian, the candidate will also support SFA’s efforts in securing food supply from overseas and local sources.

[What the role is]

[What you will be working on]

  • Lead and direct the development and implementation of comprehensive fish health and biosecurity management within MAC, ensuring alignment with international good aquaculture practices. This includes establishing governance structures, performance metrics, and continuous improvement mechanisms.
  • Spearhead the uplift of MAC's in-house disease management capabilities by designing and implementing structured capability building programmes for staff, including competency frameworks, training roadmaps, and mentorship initiatives to develop expertise in fish health identification and management. This encompasses leading and coaching staff through hands-on diagnostic work, establishing partnerships with laboratories and technology providers for disease testing services.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with key industry stakeholders and academic and research institutions to advance fish health R&D with a clear focus on translatable, industry-relevant outcomes. This includes identifying relevant problem statements for academic and research partners, ensuring research efforts are aligned with the practical needs of the aquaculture sector and supports knowledge transfer and the adoption of research findings by the industry.
  • Provide technical advice to SFA on fish health policy and strategy development to improve industry’s fish health management capabilities and outcomes. This includes leading stakeholder consultations and developing evidence-based recommendations for policy frameworks.
  • Support SFA’s efforts in securing food supply from overseas and local sources. This includes designing and implementing animal health and food safety surveillance programmes for farms; assessing risks and recommending appropriate intervention measures for disease prevention in farms; investigating and managing disease outbreaks and responses for farms and slaughterhouses; and assessing animal health and veterinary public health as part of source accreditation for the import of food and food of animal origin.

[What we are looking for]

  • Veterinary degree, preferably with specialisation in aquatic animal health
  • Preferably with relevant work experience in aquaculture
  • Familiarity with the Guidelines on the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes set forth by the National Advisory Committee for Laboratory Animal Research (NACLAR)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to collaborate across different teams to complete fish health management projects or actions
