Summit Academy is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and safety-conscious Outdoor Education Specialist to lead and develop our Outdoor Education programme. Outdoor learning is a core part of our school’s identity, providing students with opportunities to build resilience, confidence, leadership, teamwork, and practical life skills through meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.
The successful candidate will design and deliver engaging outdoor programmes for students aged 11–18, ensuring all activities are safe, inclusive, educational, and enjoyable.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Development
* Plan, organise, and deliver a comprehensive outdoor education programme throughout the school year.
* Develop age-appropriate activities that align with Summit Academy’s educational philosophy.
* Incorporate leadership, environmental stewardship, survival skills, navigation, teamwork, and personal development into outdoor experiences.
* Evaluate and continuously improve programme quality.
Outdoor Expeditions
* Lead hiking, camping, mountain climbing, kayaking, and other adventure activities.
* Organise day trips, overnight expeditions, and multi-day camps.
* Conduct thorough risk assessments and implement appropriate safety procedures.
* Ensure all equipment is maintained, inspected, and used correctly.
Student Development
* Foster resilience, independence, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
* Create an inclusive environment where students of varying abilities can participate successfully.
* Encourage positive relationships, teamwork, and leadership among students.
* Support students in overcoming challenges in a safe and encouraging manner.
Health and Safety
* Maintain the highest standards of outdoor safety.
* Develop emergency response procedures and evacuation plans.
* Ensure compliance with school policies and local regulations.
* Maintain accurate records of incidents, equipment maintenance, and risk assessments.
Staff Collaboration
* Work closely with teachers to integrate outdoor learning into the wider curriculum.
* Assist with school camps, excursions, and special events.
* Support extracurricular activities and holiday programmes where required.
* Mentor and train staff assisting with outdoor activities.
Equipment Management
* Manage outdoor equipment inventory.
* Maintain camping gear, cooking equipment, first aid supplies, ropes, and safety equipment.
* Recommend new equipment purchases and manage budgets where appropriate.
Essential Qualifications
* Degree or diploma in Outdoor Education, Adventure Education, Physical Education, Environmental Education, or a related field (preferred).
* Current Wilderness First Aid, Remote Area First Aid, or equivalent certification.
* Experience leading outdoor education programmes with children or adolescents.
* Excellent organisational and communication skills.
* Strong understanding of risk management and child safeguarding.
* High level of physical fitness.
Desirable Qualifications
* Experience leading mountain expeditions, camping, rock climbing, kayaking, or similar adventure activities.
* Experience working in an international school.
* Knowledge of Leave No Trace principles.
* Coaching or instructor qualifications in outdoor activities.
* Driver’s licence.
