Job description for Freelance Chinese/Mandarin Translator & Interpreter at Eterna Indonesia
About the Position
We are looking for a freelance Chinese/Mandarin Translator & Interpreter to support a client operating in the solar energy industry. In this role, you will facilitate real-time communication between customer-facing personnel and native Mandarin-speaking homeowners or clients.
This position is on an hourly, freelance basis, providing essential live interpretation and translation during customer calls, inquiries, and follow-ups to ensure clear understanding and smooth project delivery.
Shift Note: Please note that because our client operates in the United States, this role requires availability during US daytime hours (Indonesia night shift).
Responsibilities
- Provide live, two-way verbal interpretation (English <-> Mandarin) between customer service representatives, project managers, and Mandarin-speaking clients during scheduled calls or virtual meetings.
- Accurately translate customer inquiries, feedback, technical solar questions, and support notes to ensure clarity for all parties involved.
- Assist in translating brief written communications, project status updates, or customer notes from English into written Simplified/Traditional Chinese as needed.
- Ensure accurate translation of industry-related context (such as solar installation updates, scheduling, equipment questions, or customer service inquiries) while maintaining professional and polite client interactions.
- Maintain a high standard of client confidentiality and cultural sensitivity during all interactions.
Requirements (Must-Have)
- Fluent/Native-level proficiency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese, alongside professional fluency in English.
- Proven experience as a live interpreter or translator, preferably in customer-facing, customer success, or call-support environments.
- High level of comfort facilitating real-time conversations over calls or video meetings.
- Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and professional demeanor when communicating with clients.
- Reliable high-speed internet connection, quiet home office environment, and a dedicated headset for live call session
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in the solar, renewable energy, utilities, or technical service industries.
- Professional certification in interpretation/translation or an HSK Level 6 (or equivalent) qualification.
- Familiarity with US-based client communication tools (MS Teams or similar virtual call systems).
